Getting to Manapouri and tracks
Manapouri in Fiordland, New Zealand is for many people a side trip from Te Anau. But many miss out on one of New Zealand's great little towns. Situated 20kms from Te Anau lies Manapouri nestled against the shores of Lake Manapouri and the banks of the Waiau River.
Manapouri is the departure point for Doubtful Sound activities and cruises and the Manapouri Walking tracks.
Manapouri has a population of around 300, and provides a general store with postal services, cafe, garage, restaurant, motel, and a variety of other accommodation.
Water Taxi
Since the Back Valley area is bordered by the Waiau River, the only way across is by boat. It is actually a deep arm of Lake Manapouri created by the control structure that regulates the lake's water level for the Manapouri Power Station on the far side of the lake.
Our water taxi provides access to these walks on the Manapouri Tracks by River Water Taxi crossings.
